Phonemes

Phonemes

 any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another, for example p, b, d, and t in the English words pad, pat, bad, and bat. (https://www.google.com/search?biw=1428&bih=670&q=Dictionary#dobs=phoneme)

The importance of phonemes is that a child can distinguish the beginning sound of a word and know what letter correlates with it.
