Synthetic Phonics

Synthetic Phonics Synthetic phonics  is a method of teaching where words are broken up into the smallest units of sound (phonemes). Children learn to make connections between the letters of written texts (graphemes, or letter symbols) and the sounds of spoken language. They are able to sound the letters out and then blend them to form the word. This helps give readers confidence.

Phonemes any of the perceptually distinct units of sound in a specified language that distinguish one word from another, for example  p ,  b ,  d , and  t  in the English words  pad ,  pat ,  bad , and  bat . Morphemes

Morphemes In English grammar and morphology, a  morpheme  is a meaningful linguistic unit consisting of a word (such as dog) or a word element (such as the -s at the end of dogs) that can't be divided into smaller meaningful parts. Adjective: morphemic .  Morphemes  are the smallest units of  meaning  in a language. ( https://www.thoughtco.com/what-is-a-morpheme-1691406 ) Morphemes are important because they  are a unit of language that carries meaning.  Morphemes  are either bound (they cannot occur except in combination with other parts of language) or free (they occur on their own right as words). “overdo” is a word that consists of two morphemes , {over} and {do}, both of which are free  morphemes .( https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-importance-of-morphemes ) 

Word Sort

Word Sort A  word sort  is a developmental  word  study activity espoused by the  Words  Their Way curriculum as written by Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane Templeton, and Francine Johnston. The activity focuses students' attention on critical features of  words , namely sound, pattern, and meaning. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_sort ) Word sorts are important because they help students recognize word features and categorize words  according to.   Sorting also makes it easier to see the similarities  and differences of words.

Word Wall  A  word wall  is a collection of  words  which are displayed in large visible letters on a  wall , bulletin board, or other display surfaces in a classroom. The  word wall  is designed to be an interactive tool for students and contains an array of  words  that can be used during writing and reading. Invented Spelling Inventive  spelling  refers to the practice of children using incorrect and unusual spellings  for words. It is also sometimes called " invented spelling ." Typically, inventive  spelling  is used by students who are just learning to put sounds together to make words. It helps children put letter-sounds w with each letter. Practicing invented spelling will help with a child's reading and writing skills.
